Family Accepts Presence Of . . . a Friendly Ghost?

By Linda McCarty
Edition Staff Writer

Jackie Lichliter thought he was the only person in the house when he was carrying boxes of dishes to stack in the living room.

His last trip through the door, however, proved him wrong.

“As I got ready to put a box on the floor, I looked to my left and saw a man standing about 10 feet away and looking at another box of dishes,” Jackie said last week, as he sat beside his wife, Kelly, in their Stephenson-area home.

Jackie said the man, who was wearing jeans, a plaid shirt, and a baseball cap, had his hands crossed in front of him as he looked down at the box.

“Then he turned and looked at me and walked into the dining room and disappeared,” Jackie said. “I went looking for him, but couldn’t find him.”

At that moment, Jackie realized the man he saw was the ghost he’d been told lived in the house.

Halloween is just days away, and ghost stories appear now more than at any other time of the year. But members of at least one Frederick County family say they live with a ghost year-round.

“I started talking to him, and I told him he could stay, but asked him not to mess with me,” said Jackie, who admitted he was startled by that first encounter. “I still think about it and get chills.”

Kelly, who grew up in the house which has a section predating the Civil War and two modern additions, said she’s been aware of the ghost’s presence all of her life. So have her parents, Bill and Judy Orndoff, who sold the house to the Lichliters last year.

“When Judy and I lived there, we saw a ghost-like image a time or two,” Bill said from his and Judy’s new home off Berryville Pike.

He also said his family didn’t mind having a ghost in the house, because its presence was more comforting than threatening.

The ghost, Bill said, would most often let the Orndoffs know he was around by moving things.

“We’d move something, and he’d move it back. Except for that, he never bothered us,” Bill said.

“He’d mostly mess with Mom’s collectibles,” Kelly said.

Jackie’s second run-in with the ghost happened last fall, when he was carrying wood into the basement.

“Kelly has a little child’s rocking chair down there where I wanted to stack the wood near the wood stove,” Jackie said. “I moved the chair and when I came back with a load of wood, it was back beside the stove.”

Jackie said he moved the chair one more time. When he came with a second load of wood, the chair was back beside the stove, he said.

“So I said, ‘If that’s where you want the chair, that’s where it will stay,’” Jackie said.

Kelly said the ghost also spends time upstairs.

“I don’t know how many times we’ve driven up to the house and seen a light on upstairs and by the time we’d get inside, it would be turned off,” Kelly said.

She also recalled experiences her daughters — Jessica Bryant, 16, Amanda Bryant, 15, and Cierra Bryant, 12 — have had with the ghost.

“The girls laugh and say the TV upstairs is possessed, because it comes on in the middle of the night,” Kelly said.

The Lichliters believe the spirit’s bedroom must have been what is now Jessica’s room.

“When we first moved into the house, Amanda was in that room,” Kelly said. “She had bought a new CD player and would try to play punk-rock, but the CD player wouldn’t always work.”

Amanda swapped rooms with Jessica, who likes country and contemporary Christian music.

“Amanda didn’t have any more problems with her CD player when she changed rooms with Jessica, and Jessica didn’t have problems playing her music in her new room,” Kelly said.

Now the most common way the ghost lets the family know he’s around is through sudden, bone-chilling cold spots in the house.

“It a weird cold you all of a sudden step into for no reason,” Jackie said.

Like the Orndoffs, the Lichliters say they feel at home with the spirit.

“I still gives me chills when I remember seeing him in the living room, but it’s OK,” Jackie said.

“I think he lets us know he’s around when he gets bored or lonely,” Kelly said, “or it gets real quiet here.”

Maybe he just really loved his house. Seems like he doesn't like punk rock though.
