JESUS MARY AND DA VINCI
ABC Television Network
Premiering Monday, November 3, 2003

"JESUS, MARY AND DA VINCI," EXPLORING CONTROVERSIAL THEORIES ABOUT JESUS, MARY MAGDALENE AND THE HOLY GRAIL RAISED IN THE BESTSELLING NOVEL, "THE DaVINCI CODE," AIRS AS AN ABC NEWS SPECIAL, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 3

The bestselling novel "The Da Vinci Code" has stirred a vigorous debate by raising a number of provocative questions -- most notably, was the historical Jesus really an unmarried man? Could he have even been a father? Do his direct descendants still survive today? In an hour-long ABC News special, "Jesus, Mary and da Vinci," Elizabeth Vargas explores these and other controversial theories about the lives of Jesus and Mary Magdalene -- who some scholars believe was not a prostitute, as often portrayed, but rather Jesus' wife, and perhaps even the mother of his child. Vargas travels to the Holy Land, Italy, France and other locations around the world to investigate what evidence exists to support some of these extraordinary claims. "Jesus, Mary and da Vinci" airs MONDAY, NOVEMBER 3 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

Among those Vargas interviews are religious and art history scholars who weigh in on the feasibility of some of the theories put forth in "The Da Vinci Code." The book states that Mary Magdalene fled Jerusalem for Europe following Jesus' crucifixion, carrying their child. In France, the descendants of Jesus married into French royalty. Evidence of this story, it is said, was guarded and carried forth throughout the centuries by a secret group of some of the most famous minds in history, including Leonardo da Vinci and Sir Isaac Newton.

Photographs are available at or by calling (212) 456-7243.

Elizabeth Vargas anchors "Jesus, Mary and da Vinci." Rudy Bednar is the executive producer. Jeanmarie Condon is the senior producer. Yael Lavie is the producer.

The best-selling novel The Da Vinci Code has sparked a vigorous debate by raising a number of provocative questions -- most notably, was the historical Jesus really a married man? Could he have even been a father? Do his direct descendants still survive today? In an hour-long ABC News special, "Jesus, Mary and da Vinci," Elizabeth Vargas explores these and other controversial theories about the lives of Jesus and Mary Magdalene, who some scholars believe was not a prostitute, as she is often portrayed, but rather Jesus' wife -- and perhaps even the mother of his child. "Jesus, Mary and da Vinci" airs MONDAY, NOVEMBER 3 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

The Da Vinci Code, a mystery novel that claims to be based in part on historical fact, contains claims that Mary Magdalene was Jesus' wife, that she fled Jerusalem following his crucifixion carrying their child - and that she was perhaps the legendary Holy Grail herself. In France, Jesus' descendants married into French royalty. This story, it is said, was long protected and perpetuated by a secret society of some of the most famous men in history, including Leonardo da Vinci and Sir Isaac Newton.

Vargas travels to the Holy Land, Italy, Scotland, France and other locations around the world to investigate what evidence exists to support some of these extraordinary claims in an effort to separate fact from legend. Among those she speaks with are religion and art history scholars, as well as a Scottish aristocrat who says he thinks his family married into Jesus' bloodline in the 12th century -- though he assures Vargas that, if true, the blood line, "by the time it gets to me...will be very, very, very diluted."

Vargas finds plenty of disagreement among theologians and historians about whether there is evidence to suggest that Jesus was married. "The weight of evidence that we have suggests to me the contrary, that in fact he was a celibate," says Elaine Pagels of Princeton University. "I think it's entirely plausible to think that Jesus may have been married," counters Karen King of Harvard University. "It was a normal practice for Jewish men. It would also be normal not to mention that he had a wife." In the Bible there is no mention of Jesus being married.

One thing several authorities interviewed agree on is that Mary Magdalene's portrayal as a prostitute is attributable to mistaken identity, and her importance may have been grossly understated -- or, as some charge, purposely suppressed by the Church. "There's no factual basis for that longstanding tradition that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute, a woman of ill repute," says Father Richard McBrien of Notre Dame University. "Mary Magdalene is one of the greatest saints in the history of the church."

I'm very interested in watching this. I saw a documentary several years ago that showed some evidence that Mary Magdalene was married to Jesus, that she fled to France after his death while pregnant with his child, and that when she died a shrine was built to her b/c the locals knew she was the wife of Jesus. I think it would be fascinating to find out that Jesus had descendants, but I wonder if they would know it or not? They also said in that previous documentary that "the holy grail" was not an object, but was actually a code word for Jesus's wife. Will be interesting to see this new documentary to see what types of info they have on the topic.

Mary Magdaline, the prositute and Jesus of Nazearth, yes, this should be rich with professional curiosities.
Pass!
Even on the Learning Channel, this would be a Big Stretch!

Actually in a documentary I saw before on this topic, the claim was that she wasn't a prostitute. I'm gonna watch it, out of open-mindedness & curiosity to see what they do come up with.

Jenny,
I applaud that you treat this with open mindedness and curiousity, that you dig for why this might be possible and why this just might be hoaxed.

I believe the information that will be brought forth will always be suspect, unless you just believe everything religious that you see, feel and hear.

Knowing how John approaches these type of things, I doubt that will be the case.
There is a line in the movie Stigmata, which has always said a great deal to me where religion is concerned and it goes like this,
'You are as if, a blind man, searching in a cave for the light from the flame of a candle that blew out over 2000 years ago!'

Hi Bill,

I'm curious as to further details why that quote is impressive to you. If you are implying that the candle that blew out 2000 years ago was Jesus, I'd have to disagree. I do understand that people have a hard time grasping the fact that Jesus in spiritual form is much more powerful than he ever was in phyisical form. He never left, he just changed. Kind of like going from a candle to the equivalent of the California wild fires.

hi bill,

You said: "I believe the information that will be brought forth will always be suspect, unless you just believe everything religious that you see, feel and hear. "

I find it curious you said that. True, there is no proof in anything pertaining to religion, but as humans we have an inner need to believe in something. I was raised & married into very religious family (the first time around), and I left the church when I moved to WI, trying to make a fresh start & use my own brain to think for myself. To me, religion is what I believe. I believe certain things, but I can't prove them. To me, they are very personal, and I have reasons why I do or don't believe certain things. My main goal in life is to get as much info as possible, then its up to me to determine if it makes sense in my own mind or not. Thats what this documentary tonight will do - give me info that I can keep or discard personally.

Jen

PS. I found it interesting that you brought John up in your reply also. While John & I are married, we have very different views on religion, and while we discuss our own beliefs/opinions with each other, we are still 2 separate individuals smiley

Hi Jim,
Because it says alot about the world as it is today, is why it is an impressive statement.

All the reports of said anything he/it has done are just that - reports, created by men who then interpet men's reports and their is nothing factual within the whole grand scheme of things. It is all sciencific religious speculation.

People have faught over whose religion is the correct one and will continue to do so, learning nothing from those statements in the long run made by those men.

We have a friend of ours who is having great difficulty within their life, believes in this entity so much, that they've drafted paperwork about this entity. Yet they can't seem to believe, nor understand, that a substance their using, which is slowly killing them and causing them to lose all the friends they've come to know within this life process, except for the ones who also induge it in great quanities, is not the answer to the problems that their facing.

It's as if the drafted work is not to be believed, does not exist, so where is the God they believe in and the sending of the signals to this individual.

Or is it that their deaf, dumb and blind.

In this, they could only be the judge.

Bests,
Bill

Well I watched the show last night. I found it very interesting & very fair. They kept reiterating that this was mostly theory. While they have no proof Jesus was married, there is no proof that he wasn't. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that it would not have benefited the catholic church to retain that information in the bible & in their preachings if he was married. I'd be very interested in hearing from others who did watch it.

Bill,

Your post ended up in the alien abduction category so I'm replying to it here in the religion category & including your post below.

What I liked about that show is they did not use the bible to even come up with their theory. They used a painting by Da Vinci. That's what made it interesting. Then they just asked a bunch of biblical scholars for their opinions (which are just that, opinions), but the bottom line is, for all we know, Jesus may have been married.

---Bills original mesage---
Well Jenny, first off, I live in South Milwaukee, WI
Doreen and I discussed the program for a bit before she left the room.
Being Wiccan, she doesn't place much faith in any of these reports, claiming mostly that the Christian Church made up or stole most everything conceived from the pagans who came before them. Even our holidays were taken from pagan holidays. She believes Christ existed, as did other prophets, but looks at him more as a huskster selling newspapers on the street.
The Bible, written and rewritten by man, says whatever man says it says, which is mostly interpetation upon interpetation, as is most everything 1000 or more years back.
So thats my 2 bits worth. Myself, if you want to believe in something, believe in yourself. That will be the only one who will truely be with you when you die.

Jenny,
OK. Thats all well and good. We explored it, came to several conclusions & theories and are left with the same thing that we had before we started. Spectulations?
So, what do we do next? I ask you this though,
how many lives did this information change?
Yes, hard to tell for sure, we're more informed, but did it change anything?
Yup, right back where we started from, to continue on, as always.

Let me first start by saying I feel there is a difference between UFOlogy & religion. Some may say otherwise, but I make this reply with it in mind that they are different.

With religion, we have no answers, and I have no expectations in my life of ever finding out the truth. Same goes with ufology. However, with both things, we have circumstantial evidence. With enough circumstantial evidence, it becomes more credible. UFOs are real to me based on the accumulated number of reports & sightings. If even 1 of the millions of sightings are real, then the UFOs are real.

We can't even hope for that much with religion. Religion is more personal, and more speculative. I'm still searching for information on religion, to determine what I believe. Do I believe Jesus was married. Yes. Based on a number of things. Am I on a crusade to change people's minds & convert them to Jennyism? No, not at all. I just think by talking about these things, researching these things, and sharing info about these things, it helps broaden each of us. If you choose to believe a piece of info, good, if you don't good. Really it doesn't matter to me either way. But I prefer to keep my mind open on religion, to try to do my own research, answer all the questions I have on a topic, and then make my own determination.

So , did this documentary change anyone's lives you ask? The answer is : probably not. But it did broaden my mind & give me more things to think about. So for me, it was worth watching.

I was accused this morning of being anti-religion, that is not the case either. I love doing research on this, because it helps me come to conclusions that make sense to me, personally.

Hi Bill and all,

I'm going to go way out on a branch here, and it may very well break. But I can seriously say I don't care.

You mention Jesus being an ancient concept. I've met him in the year 2000. And also in 2001. That isn't that long ago.

But, many people ignore him, even though I have reason to believe that he has PHYSICALLY been on earth within the past 20 years.

Interested in any feedback on this one. Yes, I do believe this and am not making this up.

Hi Jim,
Did you tell him that your heart is heavy, that your mind is clouded? Several people have told me this as of late. They are all our friends. Why do we ignore them in our pursuits? Is it that their value is of a lower grade, less than something else we value?
Did he ask you about this when you talked to him?
Maybe that truely is the problem - that caring part.

Hi Jim,

As for not caring whether he was married or not, that's up to you. But I feel (and this is my opinion) that if Jesus was married, it changes a lot of things relating to the church. Closing our minds to that doesn't help, of course maybe its because you are a man, I don't know.

As for having met him, that is way cool. Unfortunately not all of us have had that luxury or benefit of getting to meet him. I can say with sincerity that I have 'talked' to Jesus in my own mind, but as of yet he hasn't answered or appeared before me. Maybe I'm just not special enough, who knows.

Regardless, as I stated before, religion is something that is of a personal nature. There are no truths. We can't even prove that God exists. So we must rely on ourselves to determine what we are willing to believe & what we aren't. And while you already have met Jesus & learned all the answers, some of us other measly humans such as myself are still researching religion. I guess some of us are just slower than others, count me in with the slow ones smiley.

Man, is this an old freak'n post rolleyes but, i think those who think Jesus was human in a sinful way, think about this....first of all if Jesus had had sex with any woman it would have been a abomination to God ,same as the angels who had sex with mortal women and created the Nephelim ...Jesus knew the demons and all their tricks and was greater than sin and temptation.Second if Jesus had sex his sperm would have been sterile since his blood would have only have his mothers chromosomes and no male chromosomes from a human father....believe in him and not the lies of a world that has lost it's hope and faith,to cheapen his life so they can feel better about sticking it to Christians and the truth

By the way,Jesus is God,his bloodline was from Adam, king David and god the father. The "novelty" ends there as all seed from his earthly bloodline since then has been corrupted and no greater than any of the rest of us. try the book of Hebrews to understand his mission on earth.Never has there been anyone like him, ever. Think about being killed, quite brutally by the Roman army and then seen by thousands of people, his mother, his disciples, wounds and all days later......can i hear a witness...Amen!

I would have been more interested in seeing the so-called evidence that he actually existed (as a man, I mean). I was under the impression that there isn't any such evidence that doesn't originate from the Christian Church, which has sort of a vested interest in particular answers
